Princess Diana’s signature

Princess Diana usually signed with just one word: “Diana”. A tall, looping D, a few rounded letters and a long underline were enough to make it one of the best-known autographs of the late twentieth century. Watch it being drawn below.

Shape

A large D with an open loop, small rounded letters after it and a long underline that sweeps up to the right.

Where it appears

Personal letters, cards, guest books and signed photographs.

Pen

Documented examples, such as a card from 1985, are in ballpoint, which gives a bold, even line.

Legibility

High. It is only one first name and the letters are open, so it reads easily at a glance.

One name is enough

Diana did not need a surname. Most of her signatures read simply “Diana”, which suits a public figure who was known worldwide by that one name. Sometimes she signed “Diana Spencer”, for example on a guest book page in July 1984, but the short form is what collectors and fans know best. A single, clear word is quick to write, and quick to recognise.

Bold, even and personal

Auction descriptions of her letters often call the signature bold, and one card signed in ballpoint “Diana, April 3rd, 1985” sold for $1,100 including the buyer’s premium. That signing happened on a busy day when she opened a housing development in Cornwall and attended a British Museum gallery opening with Prince Charles. It shows how a signature often records a particular day as much as a name.

Why her autographs are sought after

Experts note that few inscriptions by Diana come to the market, because her life was so short. Prices for her signatures and letters typically range from around $1,000 to $5,000, depending on condition, content and provenance. Collectors usually look for pre-certification from third-party services such as PSA/DNA, since a famous name attracts many copies. That makes the paperwork around a signature, such as where it was signed and who held it before, almost as important as the ink itself.

What you can learn from it

A signature can be short, friendly and still instantly recognisable. A clearly shaped first letter and one confident underline carry most of the personality in Diana’s version, and the rest is kept simple so it can be written quickly and without effort. If you are choosing your own, think about which single feature you want to repeat every time. A Professional Signature designed by us can help you find it.
