Signature Ideas for the Letter N: Styles and Tips

N is two uprights and a diagonal, easy to write and easy to get wrong. If you are a Natalie, a Noah or a Nash, this guide shows how to write the capital N, eight ways to turn it into a signature and the mistakes that make it look like an M.

How a capital N is built by hand

N is two uprights joined by a diagonal. By hand it is nearly always a zigzag written in one go: up, diagonal down, up again. What changes between writers is the second half. Some stop at the top of the right upright, some let it fall into a tail, and some curl it back like a hook. In cursive writing a capital N often resembles a capital M with one hump fewer, so the biggest risk is writing either one with the wrong number of peaks.

The start of the N is also a design choice. A small curl before the first upright adds elegance, while a straight start looks businesslike. Because the diagonal is the longest stroke, it is the natural place for emphasis.

8 signature styles for names with N

  1. Zigzag N. Two sharp peaks and a clean diagonal. Crisp and easy to repeat: Nina Nash, Neil Nolan.
  2. Rounded N. Soften the peaks into arches, like a small m. Friendly and fluent, for Natalie Newman or Nicola Nunn.
  3. Tail N. Let the right upright fall below the line and curve back under the name. Gives short names such as Ned or Nell some weight.
  4. Entry curl. Begin with a small loop on the left and then do the zigzag. A traditional touch for Nadia Norton.
  5. N plus surname. A strong N followed by a clear surname: N. Patel, N. Brooks. Good for long first names like Nathaniel or Nicolette.
  6. Diagonal as underline. Extend the diagonal to the left, under the name. It turns a plain N into a feature, e.g. for Noel Nesbit.
  7. Double N. Names like Nancy Nash or Norman Nixon can share the middle stroke, so one zigzag becomes a monogram.
  8. Tall N. Draw the uprights very tall and narrow, then write the rest of the name in small, neat letters. Smart, with a formal tone.

Drawing the N in five steps

  1. Start at the bottom left and go up the first upright.
  2. Turn at the top and run the diagonal down to the base line on the right.
  3. Turn again and go up the second upright, keeping it about as tall as the first.
  4. Decide on the ending: stop, tail or hook.
  5. Write the next letter, and check that the second upright has not leant into it.

Say "up, down, up" under your breath as you write. It sounds silly, but it is the easiest way to stop a hurried N from gaining or losing a peak. The N also joins well to rounded letters (a, o) and less well to letters with a stem (i, l), so look at what follows your N before choosing a style.

Noah is a good example of a name worth getting right: according to the ONS baby names for England and Wales, it was the second most popular boys' name in 2023. Short names like Noah or Nell suit a tail N. Long ones such as Nathaniel or Nicolette are better with N plus surname.

A quick test for any of these: sign your name ten times on a plain sheet, then compare the Ns. If the peaks, the angle of the diagonal and the ending are the same each time, you have a style you can keep. If they drift, drop the flourish and keep the zigzag. A plain N that you can repeat at speed beats an ornate one that only works on a good day, and it is much easier for someone else to match against your earlier signatures.

Mistakes to avoid with N

  • An N with three peaks (it becomes an M) or one peak (it becomes a V or an unfinished U).
  • A diagonal that is too flat, so the letter reads like a stretched H.
  • A tail that hooks into the next letter and changes what it says. "Nina" can become "Nira" very quickly.
  • Loops where the uprights should be. Too many curls and your N becomes an abstract mark.

Frequently asked questions

How do I stop my N looking like an M?

Count the peaks. An N has two uprights, an M has three. Say it as you write: up, down, up.

Can the diagonal of the N be skipped?

In fast handwriting it often is, and the letter becomes an arch. That is fine if it stays legible to you, but a clear diagonal is the safer choice.

Is a tail on the N a good idea?

Only if it ends clear of the next letter. Otherwise it can change how your name reads.

Which N works with a short name?

The tail N or the diagonal-as-underline. Both use the letter to fill space.
